How we get our prices

Where the data comes from

Every price on Where2Shop is collected directly from the retailers' own public websites — the same prices you'd see shopping online at Coles and Woolworths. We don't type prices in by hand, estimate them, or copy them from other comparison sites. The catalogue currently tracks more than 36,000 products across the three chains.

How often it updates

The full catalogue re-syncs every week, aligned with the weekly specials cycle (new specials drop on Wednesdays). Every listing page shows when its data was last updated — and if a sync is ever late, the page says "last verified" with the real date instead of pretending to be current. We'd rather show you an honest timestamp than a fake "live" badge.

What we do to the raw data

  • Unit prices — we normalise price-per-100g/L so a 375g pack and a 500g pack compare fairly. When an item is cheaper only because it's smaller, you can see it.
  • Cross-store matching — equivalent products are grouped automatically ("cheapest for this item") using name, category and pack-size signals. Automated matching isn't perfect: when two products shouldn't be compared, use the feedback button and we fix it.
  • Error filtering — retailers occasionally publish absurd unit prices (we've seen $9,500/100ml). Known-bad entries are corrected or dropped at ingestion, with a sanity ceiling as a safety net.

The limits we own up to

  • In-store shelf prices can differ from online prices, and some prices vary by region.
  • Specials can sell out or end before the catalogue week does.
  • We don't cover every product the chains sell — the catalogue focuses on everyday groceries.
  • Half-price detection follows the retailers' own catalogue flags, which occasionally lag.

Neutrality

No supermarket pays to appear here, and none can pay for a better ranking. The cheapest store wins because it's the cheapest — that's the whole point of the site. If we ever earn a commission on something (for example a delivery link), it will never change a price shown or a comparison result, and it will be disclosed where it appears.
